Highgate Cemetery
Highgate Cemetery
Working on behalf of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust, we were appointed to lead a major Conservation Plan for both east and west sites at Highgate Cemetery, London. This far-reaching project was designed to inform a new vision for the future of the Cemetery and involved the analysis of buildings, monuments, landscape, ecology, arboriculture and burials.
Through extensive public consultation, we developed policies and recommendations for ways to enhance the visitor experience while sustaining burial provision. Working with landscape expert Deborah Evans, we set out ways to enhance the special character and the ecology, for a sustainable future as a twenty-first century cemetery.
Our plan was subsequently used as a key source document to inform the brief and design proposals for two architectural competitions, held by the Trust in 2020. In 2021 the Trust appointed winners Gustafson Porter + Bowman (landscape architects) and Hopkins Architects (architects) to take their design proposals forward.
