Kasbah Conservation Area Management Plan
The Kasbah Conservation Area Management Plan
The Kasbah was once a busy neighbourhood filled with retail outlets, smokehouses, warehouses, sail makers and more. As it developed in the 1870s, this ‘town within a town’ grew up to serve the booming fishing port, and is described by Historic England as the most important representation of industrial scale fishing in the UK.
In 2017 the Kasbah was designated a conservation area and soon thereafter included in the 2018-2023 Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone, bringing hope, protection, and funding opportunities to this historic site.
In 2022 we undertook a Conservation Management Plan for the site, which was produced to ensure the future of the unique smokeries and buildings of the world’s greatest fishing port as well as managing change to enable a thriving, heritage-led regeneration of this unique town-within-a-town. Getting the input of current businesses, local people in Grimsby and heritage stakeholders was critical to provide a consensus for future decisions in the Kasbah, and continued stewardship of the conservation area long after the Heritage Action Zone projects came to an end.
North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet member for Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Cllr Callum Procter, stated:
“I’m really pleased this management plan is underway. We need to understand how buildings on this important dock can be used so we can attract creative and other industries to use the docks as a base to work from in the future.”
