Lowther Castle and Gardens
Lowther Castle and Gardens
As engineers and conservation advisors, we advised on proposals for the installation of a new canopies and doors for the former Coach House at Lowther Castle. This building (pictured, left of the castle) is the west wing of the Castle and serves as the home for the main visitor centre, exhibition area and cafe.
The Castle is a Grade II* listed ruin that sits within a Grade II Registered Park and Garden and the Lake District, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is a fully managed ruin, where the public have been able to visit the shell of the castle and gardens since 2011.
Working in collaboration with architects Ben Pentreath and Drinkall Dean, we advised on the size, scale and proportion of the new canopies and how these could be fixed to the listed fabric of the building without harming it’s appearance, character or historical significance. Our conservation team subsequently advised on the addition of two new doors on the wing.
