Olympia London

We were appointed by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham to act as independent heritage advisers on a planning and listed building application for major alterations to the Olympia Exhibition Centre.

The Grand Hall at Olympia (Grade II* listed) was the largest enclosed floorspace in England when it was constructed in 1885, designed to host large-scale entertainments and events, while the charming adjacent Pillar Hall (Grade II*) provided a banqueting suite. The site was expanded in the 1920-30s with the construction of the National Hall (Grade II), Olympia Central (Grade II) and the multi-storey car park (Grade II), stylistically reflecting their different eras of construction but relating closely to each other functionally. Today, the Olympia site is a landmark of national significance.

We provided a succinct summary of the significance of the listed buildings and conservation areas affected by the proposals. We scrutinised the submitted Design and Access Statement and the Heritage Townscape and Visual Effect Assessment Environmental Statement and provided an overview of the impact of the proposed scheme on the listed buildings. Our advice formed part of the documentation provided to Councillors to help the Planning Committee come to a balanced decision on the merits of the application.
