Paradise, Birmingham

Paradise is a comprehensive reworking of one of the most complex and strategic urban sites in Birmingham, if not in Britain. It is where the city’s sensitive historic and civic core has been sliced through by layers of post-war redevelopment and by the multi-level ring road that disconnects it from areas to its west.

As part of the large team, we played an early role in the project's initial stages by writing the EIA chapters on townscape and visual impact, and cultural heritage.

Working on behalf of Argent LLP and Birmingham City Council, we also advised on urban design, views, heritage, public realm and open space and were asked to review and assist with the preparation of the Design Protocol document.

Our Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment set out character areas, offering a more comprehensive reflection of how each area is composed. In coordination with Cityscape we assessed the potential extent of views of the proposed development, allowing for appropriate selection of viewpoints and advising on building heights in response to sensitive townscape and heritage receptors.

In 2022, Paradise won an AJ Architecture Award as Masterplan of the Year.
