St Cuthbert’s Church, Darlington
St Cuthbert’s Church, Darlington
We undertook a Conservation Plan for this important Grade I-listed church. One of the finest 12th century churches in the north of England, most of the original cruciform structure survives.
There is a loyal but small congregation and in recognition of the church’s prime town centre location and outstanding importance, St Cuthbert’s has been designated a Resource Church. As such it will benefit from funding to improve access, worship and community and outreach activity.
We were asked to produce a Conservation Plan to concisely and graphically summarise its history, set out heritage significance and identify risks to that significance and opportunities to enhance the church.
These ideas were developed through engagement with the church community, the Diocese, Historic England and others, and informed subsequent proposals developed by Knox McConnell Architects, for which we also provided advice.
