St Martin-in-the-Fields

Working with Eric Parry Architects, we applied a comprehensive range of our skills to one of the most complex and ambitious projects ever undertaken at a parish church .

We acted as lead structural engineers for the restoration of the listed Grade I church, the refurbishment of John Nash’s Parochial Buildings and the construction of a new double basement beneath the churchyard between the two, as well as developing movement strategies for the surrounding area and preparing the conservation strategy and the successful Heritage Lottery Fund application for the £34m scheme.

The new basement – entered from a unique load-bearing glass pavilion – provides space for visitors, a new church hall and facilities to support the diverse functions within the church and crypt; its construction on a highly contained site over the Northern Line and between listed buildings presented considerable challenges.

“This project has been a truly epic undertaking and its completion is doubtless as much a tribute to its architect’s powers of negotiation as to the intelligence it has brought to the design. Faced with a fantastically complex set of challenges, it has somehow maintained a real singularity of vision throughout.” - Ellis Woodman writing Building Design (2008)
