Stonehenge Learning Centre - Kusuma Neolithic Hall
Stonehenge Learning Centre - Kusuma Neolithic Hall
We are the structural engineers for two new additional buildings at Stonehenge – a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wiltshire, England.
The construction of a new learning centre and a replica Neolithic communal structure will provide new learning facilities to enhance the appreciation and interpretation of the site and forms a central part of a broader learning initiative designed to deepen public engagement with the site’s prehistoric heritage.
The Kusuma Neolithic Hall recreates a communal structure based on evidence from Durrington Walls, a nearby Neolithic settlement. Working under the guidance of experimental archaeologist Luke Winter, a team of over 100 volunteers, students and archaeologists employed authentic prehistoric construction techniques using locally sourced materials such as coppiced timber, thatch, chalk‑based daub and limewash. As engineers, we advised during the design and construction phases, and supported the integration of low‑carbon design principles into the design, such as natural ventilation and minimal heating needs, contributing to a sustainable visitor experience.
Designed to accommodate up to thirty students, the space allows learners to gather around a central hearth and handle replica tools, creating a setting that evokes daily life 4,500 years ago.
It will enable a richer understanding of the monument and its ancient context while meeting the growing demand for accessible, high‑quality educational facilities at Stonehenge.
In addition to the Kusuma Neolithic Hall, English Heritage’s learning provision at Stonehenge will encompass a brand-new environmentally sensitive Learning Centre - also designed by AOC Architecture with support from our engineers - housing the Clore Discovery Lab, Weston Learning Studio, digital production studio, Wolfson Foyer and an open-air courtyard to support sensory learning.
