TfL: Best Practice Note

Transport for London: Best Practice Note

Alan Baxter prepared a Best Practice Note for development in the historic environment, to help TfL and its design teams respond positively to the unique design inheritance of London Underground.

TfL has a commitment to use surplus land to help deliver much needed new housing for London.  Many of the sites are on or adjacent to existing stations, many of which are listed and play an important role in their local townscape.

Our Note concisely expresses the importance of understanding the significance and setting of TfL heritage assets when developing at or adjacent to such sites. It offers a process that design teams should follow that encouraged an integrated approach to design, with heritage considerations informing each stage of the design process. It also identifies the key historical and setting typologies of TfL’s vast Underground and Overground network, suggesting ways in which this information can feed into and influence the design of new development.
