Whipps Cross Hospital Masterplan

Whipps Cross Hospital Masterplan

Whipps Cross is one of London’s major hospitals, lying on the edge of Epping Forest and serving the boroughs of Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Newham. It is a university hospital managed by Barts Health NHS Trust, employing around 3,000 staff and providing treatment for around 250,000 patients a year. Its sprawling 18ha campus has developed over a 100 years and many of its buildings are derelict or do not meet the requirements of modern healthcare provision.

We worked with Allies and Morrison and GL Hearn on an initial masterplan study which established a vision and framework for intensifying the site to provide a new replacement hospital, alongside related health and leisure facilities and new residential neighbourhoods.

Our role focused on transport and movement issues, and included setting out key principles like a flexible framework of streets, improving walking and cycling permeability to the surrounding areas, consolidating the hospital’s surface car parks, separating out residential, hospital and operational traffic, and extending the borough’s transformational “Mini-Holland” improvements into the campus.
