Paul has worked on a range of projects in the cultural and public sector including the refurbishment and assessment of both historic and modern buildings.
He has developed a particular specialism for historic buildings of national and international signifciance, bringing his deep udnerstanding of historic materials to a range of major projects. He has gained detailed knowledge of The Parliamentary Estate, together with an understanding of the stakeholders and the unique constraints and challenges that exist when working on such a symbolic Grade I listed building, within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most recently, he led our input on the appraisal and repairs to the New Palace Yard Underground car park. Here, his expertise in historic concrete structures has enabled a carefully targeted series of repair proposals to be developed.
Recent projects include St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where the condition of the original Georgian Hospital buildings and the Henry VIII Gatehouse were extensively reviewed., with Paul undertaking a series of investigations and repairs to remediate the problems identified with embedded ironwork in the stone facades. Paul advised a thoughtful, light touch approach to the repairs to limit works affecting the original building fabric.
He also led a significant programme of repairs to the structure and external fabric at St Marylebone Parish Church, including structural enhancements to the original timber roof trusses, repairs to defective stonework, cleaning and conservation of the decorative elements of the portico, and the repair and replacement of embedded metalwork within the external walls and clocktower. Paul’s work was recognised at the National Churches Trust Awards, where the project was named Church of the Year, with the judges explaining that the church “epitomises everything that a successful, sustainable, and open church should be.”
Within the firm, Paul is our technical focus on cast iron and masonry and plays an active part in our training programme, helping in the development and training of younger engineers and graduates.
