East Ham Civic Campus

East Ham Civic Campus

We provided heritage advice and Heritage Statements to support Newham Council’s successful applications to demolish a listed Victorian school gym and build a new Customer Service Centre and Library in the East Ham Civic Centre Conservation Area.

The site is part of a town-centre block that contains several listed buildings: East Ham Town Hall (1901–3), which is listed at Grade II*, and the Technical College (1904–5), Library (1907–8) and Fire Station (1913), which are all Grade II. We helped the Council to see that the proposed new building had to be considered as one element within an overarching strategy to regenerate the entire Campus including the Town Hall; the historic buildings have now been refurbished and brought back into full occupation as part of the scheme for the reuse of the whole site.

Having untangled the complex history of the civic buildings and analysed the significance of the different elements, we advised MICA Architects on the preparation of designs for the new building. We also led pre-application consultations with English Heritage, which helped the council’s own application to proceed smoothly through planning.
