Museum Gardens, York
We produced a Strategic Conservation Plan for this Grade II listed Registered Park and Garden site with a complex and layered history ranging from the Roman occupation of York to the present day, reflected in its many designated heritage assets that include 12 Grade I listed buildings and three Scheduled Monuments.
The Gardens have a complex and layered history ranging from the Roman occupation of York to the present day, and this is reflected in its many designated heritage assets (the site is located within York’s Central Historic Core Conservation Area (YCHCCA), recognised as one of the largest and most complex conservation areas in the country. It is also within the City Centre Area of Archaeological Importance). At the centre of the site is the Grade I listed Yorkshire Museum, understood to be one of the country’s first purpose-built museums, alongside the Gothic remains of the St Mary’s Abbey complex (Grade I listed and a Scheduled Monument). Altogether, the site offers over 1,600 years of historical, architectural, archaeological, and cultural value, continuing as a centre for learning and public enjoyment.
The plan concluded that sustainable reuse, carefully managed change, and improved presentation of the precinct could bring citywide and national benefits, while ensuring the long-term conservation of this uniquely layered historic environment.
