University of Greenwich - Dreadnought Building
The Dreadnought building is located on the University of Greenwich’s Greenwich campus next to the Old Royal Naval College. It was built in 1763 and is listed Grade II. Built as Greenwich Hospital’s infirmary, it had been used as the University of Greenwich’s library since 1999.
We worked as structural engineers with Dannatt Johnson Architects and Willmott Dixon Construction to convert it into a new student hub for the Greenwich Students’ Union, the new Lower Deck venue and Change coffee, the Galley cafe and the Sports Deck gym, the Student Centre on Greenwich campus and Student and Academic Services, the Departments of Education & Community Studies and Psychology, Social Work & Counselling, Open Access IT labs, social learning spaces and the Directorate of Information & Library Services.
The scheme involved improving the spaces in the existing building by removing walls and lowering the basement, as well as providing a new, spacious infill structure in the courtyard. The project was shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2019 in the Higher and Further Education category.
“This is a transformation, not just of this building but it enables our students to be transformed too. You have sown a seed here which will flourish for current students and all students who follow them.” - The University’s Chancellor, Baroness Scotland PC QC.
