Alan Baxter is an Engineer by origin with a wide range of interests. He founded the practice in 1974 and the firm has grown steadily under his guidance.

In addition to his involvement in urban design and masterplanning projects, he and the firm are responsible for the engineering of new buildings of architectural significance as well as the sensitive repair and adaptation of a vast range of historic buildings. He and his colleagues have written Conservation Plans for many nationally important buildings.

He served on Historic England’s national Urban Panel and was for many years a member of English Heritage’s London Advisory Committee.

Michael has extensive experience of new buildings, reuse of existing buildings, bridges, roads and infrastructure. He started his career in contracting, before becoming a design consultant, first on bridges and subsequently on buildings. He contributes significantly to the overall direction of the practice, its quality management and training. He remains hands-on as a designer, overseeing and guiding the firm’s engineering projects.

Michael supports the work of CABE on their design review and enabling programmes, and has supported the Association for Consultancy and Engineering through Board Membership and Chairmanship of their Membership Committee.

Jim is responsible for many of Alan Baxter’s architectural engineering projects. He has extensive experience of building types from public to commercial and from new build to refurbishment. In particular, his work has included a number of education projects and both private and social housing developments.

Jim is responsible within the office for developing our expertise in basement design, which is highly regarded. He is also interested in exploring potential cladding systems. This complements his expertise in devising creative solutions on projects that require the structure to be expressed as part of the architecture.

William leads our conservation and urbanism groups. He is an architectural historian and archaeologist, with a particular interest and experience in using an understanding of the past to create great places for the present and future.

William works on a wide variety of projects, from Conservation Plans and Heritage Statements to Masterplans, from Medieval cathedrals to 20th century Universities and 21st century Garden Towns, and from major public bodies, landowners and charities to private developers and owners. He heads the practice’s widely respected work on historic infrastructure, particularly railways, with major projects for Network Rail, Crossrail and HS2.

Adam leads one of our structural engineering teams and has delivered many creative and award winning schemes. He has a keen interest in the care for existing buildings and has overseen our work on many important heritage buildings including the British Museum and Palace of Westminster.

His work includes major refurbishments at the National Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Geffrye Museum.

He directed our work on the Stirling Prize winning Everyman Theatre and also oversaw our design for the new School of Architecture for the University of Greenwich which was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2015.

Alan has considerable experience across a wide range of structural and civil engineering projects including major new developments, refurbishment of existing buildings, rail infrastructure, urban engineering and public realm projects. He has been responsible for a number of station design and development projects including the preparation of masterplans for major stations and new developments with complex rail interfaces.

Alan is also the focus for our civil engineering work including site infrastructure, flood risk and SuDS on larger development sites, for both pre and post planning stages.

Alan is appointed to London Borough of Haringey’s Design Review Panel.

Director

Andy is a civil engineer who has taken on a number of responsibilities facilitating the general running of the firm. He remains active in his engineering role, relating to our urban team, as an integral part of the checking process.

Andy is Director of personnel, overseeing the training and development of our staff, and is responsible for our administration systems.

He is also responsible for our buildings and facilities, which houses over 90 other organizations from the built environment as well as Alan Baxter.

Director

Richard is an architectural historian with a broad range of historical expertise. He has extensive experience of producing detailed assessments of historic buildings and landscapes and of negotiating with heritage bodies, amenity societies and local authorities over management plans and listed building consent applications.

Richard’s previous roles include Secretary of SAVE Britain’s Heritage, and author and contributor for Pevsner Architectural Guides. He sits on the Councils of the Ancient Monuments Society and the Spitalfields Buildings Preservation Trust, and is a committee member of SAVE.

Clare leads our urban design team. She is an experienced urban designer and chartered landscape architect with wide ranging experience of leading masterplans and design strategies in complex urban and rural environments.

Clare works with public sector clients to develop local planning policy and guidance, and with private landowners who are looking to deliver high quality and distinctive places which respond strongly to local context.

Clare is an experienced facilitator of community and stakeholder events and has developed innovative hands-on engagement techniques which encourage participants to weigh up aspirations and constraints to create deliverable, community-led design solutions.

David has a wide range of experience on a variety of challenging new-build projects and historic structures. He has overseen them at all stages from inception to completion and has developed an in-depth knowledge of many different forms of construction.

David is our director of IT, responsible for the continual improvement of our IT systems to facilitate our work. His wider interests include architectural photography and he is responsible for creating a photographic record of many of our completed projects.

Nick is the Director of Finance for the practice and is responsible for the management of the Finance Group.

He is a qualified chartered accountant, having trained in London with Ernst & Young.

Nick’s responsibilities include management reporting on all financial issues, the preparation of statutory accounts and returns, the renewal of the insurances of the practice and overall control of the firm’s project database.

He also contributes to the overall direction of the practice by co-ordinating and managing the forecasting of future workload and profitability.

John has solved some of the most complex structural engineering problems the Practice has encountered. His experience ranges from major new constructions to careful repairs of historic structures, appraisals and designs. He acts as consultant to the design groups within the firm, and externally as an expert witness on complex problems. He also contributes significantly to the Practice’s training programme and its technical knowledge.

John has served on working parties for UK technical standards and guidance and currently contributes to updating of European Standards.

Ian’s expertise stretches across many types of work, including large projects for commercial, education, residential, public and hotel buildings. He has worked on several technically complex projects, including deep basements under existing buildings and work for archives and galleries. His projects include a great range of new build and refurbishment projects alike.

Within the office Ian is responsible for our Quality Management System. This ensures consistent, high quality design, through a critical peer review of the design principles and the wider rationale behind each project, followed by detailed independent checking of the firm’s output. Ian is also responsible for our Environmental, Health & Safety and BIM management systems.

Trenton leads the transport and movement engineering team within our Urbanism group. With a background in civil engineering and integrated land use and transport planning, he has significant experience dealing with the movement issues that shape the places and streets we live in.

Trenton works on transport strategies for urban regeneration schemes, masterplans and neighbourhood plans, he designs public realm, streetscape and interchange improvements, and prepares detailed transport assessments and travel plans for new developments. Trenton often helps facilitate community planning events, guiding stakeholder and community groups to explore innovative ways of improving places, streets and spaces.

Tom has extensive experience of complex new build projects on restricted urban sites as well as major alterations to existing and historic buildings. Uses range from residential and office developments to historic visitor attractions.

Tom runs our extensive in-house training programme, acts as mentor for recent graduates as they develop professionally, and sets design challenges based on real life problems for engineering students at City University. He is the firm’s technical focus on reinforced concrete and detailing.

David’s significant experience includes both commercial and institutional projects and has ranged from complex new-build to highly sensitive refurbishments of major historic buildings and national landmarks. He has an in-depth knowledge of a broad sweep of building types, from new and existing office buildings and housing to educational institutions, museums and churches.

He has advised extensively on the impact of major tunnelling works on designated heritage assets.

Within the office, David is the technical focus for all surveys and investigations works and is responsible for coordinating the firms approach to Health and Safety and the CDM regulations.

Adrian has a strong background in healthcare having been senior design engineer for a number of major new build and refurbishment hospital projects. He also works on landmark historic buildings, retail developments and residential projects, including both new construction and conversion from other uses.

Adrian’s responsibilities within the practice include acting as technical focus for demolition techniques with interest in sustainable demolition and he is also point of contact for specialist healthcare structures.

Raihan has extensive experience on a wide range of projects, including both new build and refurbishments. These range from office and retail schemes to leisure and theatre projects, as well as residential developments and educational buildings. He has worked at all stages from project conception through technical analysis to detailed design, and beyond to site work during construction. Raihan has a particular professional interest in loadings and building services strategies and also in the investigation and appraisal of steel decay.

Olivier has extensive experience of major alterations to existing and historic buildings, along with complex new build projects on restricted sites. His work ranges from regional and national centres for education, culture and the arts, to new homes for private clients in challenging locations.

Olivier is the technical focus at ABA for sustainable design, collating information and experience from around the firm and developing ways for assessing and improving the company’s approach to sustainability.

Luca has worked on a wide variety of building types and sizes, for both the public and private sectors. At one end of the scale these include major new residential developments, the design of significant alterations to post-war office buildings, and urban regeneration projects; at the other sensitive changes to Georgian and Victorian terraced houses. Most recently he has been responsible for the adaptation of redundant twentieth-century industrial premises for housing and leisure use. He has worked on geotechnical engineering projects both in the UK and abroad.
